Food Waste
DCU acknowledges that food waste across the world is a major contribution to our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with ongoing efforts across the University to reduce food waste.
The following efforts by DCU Rooms, DCU Trispace and DCU Helix serve to address this issue.
DCU Rooms
DCU Rooms engages with Trispace surrounding the delivery of food to conferences and meetings, encouraging the segregation of waste, providing suitable bins for ease of use and holding regular information sessions about sustainable waste practices.
DCU Trispace
Trispace is a wholly DCU owned catering company which produces fresh food based on prior sales. Where there is surplus food at end of day, this is made available on TooGoodToGo, the world's largest marketplace for surplus food. Trispace menus are crafted around reducing food waste, and where possible food items are regenerated to form different dishes. Where this is not possible, surplus food items are delivered to DCU Student's Union and are made available to students free of charge.
DCU Helix
At the Helix, food waste in the form of coffee grounds are given away for use in gardens or are composted. Leftover food at end of day is offered to staff. During large scale events such as graduations, DCU Trispace recovers leftovers and returns them to the campus Restaurant.
