Nature Positive us a globally recognised initiative that serves to halt and reverse nature loss, with the aim of achieving full recovery by 2050. This goal will be achieved through net-positive biodiversity movements by increasing the richness and abundance of species, ecosystems and natural processes.
A central idea of the Nature Positive initiative is to 'protect what is next and improve the rest.' Nature is inextricably linked to us as humans, and is the foundation of our society, our infrastructure, our livelihoods and all modern conveniences. To help nature is to help ourselves.
The EPA determined that in Ireland there are five key factors that cause strain on the state of nature- agricultural activity, invasive species, conversion of land for building, resource extraction and forestry.
DCU has committed to becoming a Nature Positive University by 2030.
Ireland has a Biodiversity Action Plan for 2030 that seeks to secure the integral relationship between nature and humans.
Currently, 85% of Ireland's EU-protected habitats are in unfavourable condition. Loss of Nature Positive ecosystems has resulted in the loss of range and abundance of over 50% of native plant species.
DCU's Biodiversity Action Plan establishes biodiversity as a focal point in any decision-making regarding public spaces, building and grounds management and construction.
