Below are some helpful resources about sustainability, Ireland's position in the current climate and actions we can all undertake to build a sustainable future.
Our thriving beef industry is disproportionately affecting our planet. Currently there are a greater number of cattle than people in Ireland, with agricultural activities being responsible for approximately one third of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Ireland punches above its weight in many sectors- but this comes at the cost of impacting the planet. Nations in the global south stand to suffer the consequences of the climate inaction of comparatively wealthy nations.
Our planets' population is growing exponentially, and our current economic system demands exponential growth. This system is not compatible with a sustainable lifestyle. Our future must look different, but different can mean better!
Climate Change is our collective responsibility. Adapting our individual behaviors to promote sustainability is important, however it is most important that we use our power to instigate change at a national level by advocating for accountability in our laws and policies.
The Earth's climate should not change so drastically in such a short amount of time. The Earth goes through cycles of warming and cooling due to natural processes such as changes in the sun's activity or the planet tilting on its' axis. However, the data shows that if human activity were not a factor in climate change, our global temperatures would be cooling instead of drastically warming. The concentration of CO2 in our atmosphere directly correlates with the increase in global temperature we observe.
With significant climate action now and an organised, managed transition: a post-carbon world would be locally focused, much less materially consumptive and centered on the protection and restoration of our planet.
If we continue business as usual- our natural resources, economic system and our society will likely collapse.
