Active Commuting

DCU is a multi-campus University and is the second-largest commuting hub in the North Dublin region after the airport. DCU works closely with the National Transport Authority (NTA) and is an active member of the Smarter Travel Campus Programme.

Active Commuting

DCU's Smarter Travel Working Group works to promote and support active commuting to campus. DCU strongly encourages active commuting (walking/cycling) to campus where possible, with various facilities to make commuting more comfortable. 

Shower Facilities

Shower and changing facilities are available to active commuters across academic campuses. 

Glasnevin Campus: 

  • In the Sports Centre
  • The ground floor of the Albert College Extension (beside 1838 restaurant)
  • The Lonsdale Building (XB17/19)

St. Patrick's Campus:

  • The Undercroft cycle parking area at Block F

All Hallows Campus:

  • The ground floor of Senior House

     

Bike Clinics

DCU provides free bicycle service clinics for all students and staff during term time. This service is provided by the Rediscovery Centre with labour costs covered by DCU Sustainability and the DCU Student's Union. 

Standard services (overall safety check, adjustments and lubrication) including:

  • Brake check and tuning
  • Gear check and tuning
  • Wheel check for wear and damage
  • Tyre check and inflation
  • Wire-brush clean of drive train and lubrication
  • Adjustment of handlebars, levers and saddle

Bike clinics are run throughout academic semesters. 

 

NTA Smarter Travel Mark

NTA Smarter Travel Mark

DCU gained the NTA Smarter Travel Mark (Silver) in 2023 in recognition of prioritising sustainable and active commuting. This Mark celebrates organisations that support Smarter and sustainable travel for their workforce and visitors and promotes a reduction in single-person car journeys.
