Reflective Practice

What is Reflective Practice?

Reflection

Reflective practice is the process of intentionally examining and analysing one’s experiences, actions, and decisions to gain deeper insights and improve future outcomes. It involves a process of critically thinking about an experience, why it happened that way, what the outcomes were, and how things might be approached differently in the future.

It can play a crucial role in improving teaching effectiveness by enabling educators to critically assess their teaching methods, respond to the diverse needs of students, and promote a culture of ongoing development. When integrated into student learning, reflective practice encourages students to think critically, develop both personally and academically, and take ownership of their lifelong learning.

Reflective Practice Guide and Resources

This guide is designed to help educators enhance their own reflective teaching practice while supporting students in developing reflective thinking and writing skills. It introduces key models of reflection, explores the benefits of reflective practice for educators and learners, and provides practical strategies for guiding and assessing students’ reflective work. It also features a carefully selected collection of resources to support further learning about reflective practice. A practical and insightful resource, this guide empowers educators to integrate reflective practice confidently into their teaching and inspire students to engage deeply with their learning.

DCU’s eportfolio platform, Loop Reflect, facilitates reflective practice by providing a secure and flexible space to document experiences, reflect on learning, and track progress over time. By enabling continuous reflection, it helps users make connections between past and present experiences, gain deeper insights, and use these to guide future actions. This process promotes personal and professional growth, making reflection an active and meaningful process rather than a single isolated activity. Further examples of portfolios created by students from various programmes are available on the Loop Reflect Help page.
