SoTL Resources & Professional Development
When reflecting on teaching practice, established curriculum design frameworks such as ABC Learning Design can kick-start individual and/or collaborative team reflections on key aspects of your teaching design. Our checklist for reflecting with ABC learning design offers a simple pedagogically-oriented entry point to the critical reflective process. Other professional development opportunities such as Peer Observation of Teaching and Advance HE professional recognition also inform and drive engagement with SoTL activity.
Those considering wider dissemination of findings need to read this concise guide to Ethics in the Scholarship of Teaching & learning (Fedoruk, 2017). This guide explores common potential dilemmas that need to be considered in SoTL research, including conflicts of interest & power relationships, consent processes, fairness & equity, and privacy & confidentiality. These topics are also explored in a video of a recent panel discussion on research ethics and SoTL which explores important general and AI-specific ethical research considerations. A more detailed deep-dive into the topic of research ethics in SoTL is explored further in the book by Fedoruk (2022) who pays special attention to ethical concerns and experiences that have arisen.
Those who are new to this educational research space and those who would welcome a refresher are invited to participate in SoTL workshops run by the TEU. Topics introducing the concept of SoTL/educational research, scenarios that prompt research ideas and collaborations, and advice related to research ethics, article writing, and targeted dissemination are explored. These workshops are advertised via the TEU update and can also be facilitated for teams of staff on request.
