DCU Water Institute Celebrates a Decade of Discovery, Innovation and Impact

Anniversary Week 2025 - Day 2

As we continue the celebrations for the DCU Water Institute’s 10th Anniversary, today we highlight the achievements, partnerships and pioneering research that have defined the Institute since its establishment in 2015. December 2025 marks an important milestone for a team that has evolved into a national and international leader in water science, technology development and environmental collaboration.

The decade has been shaped by multidisciplinary expertise, spanning environmental science, engineering, chemistry, computing, social sciences and policy. What began as a small research initiative is now a collaborative hub addressing some of the most complex water challenges facing society.

A Decade of Achievement

The progress made over the past ten years reflects the dedication of our researchers, partners and students. Key areas of impact include:

Research leadership
Ground-breaking work on emerging contaminants such as microplastics, pharmaceuticals, PFAS and harmful pathogens.

Environmental technology development
Innovative sensors and monitoring tools that allow real-time assessment of water quality and environmental health.

Long-term field programmes
Continuous monitoring of rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal zones to understand ecosystem change and guide policy.

Policy engagement
Evidence-based contributions to national strategies and EU water directives.

Education and training
Supporting the next generation of water scientists through hands-on research, postgraduate training and industry-focused learning.

These achievements underscore our commitment to protecting water resources for communities, ecosystems and future generations.

Looking Ahead: Securing the Future of Water

As the Institute moves into its second decade, its mission remains clear. We aim to deepen our scientific understanding, develop new technologies and strengthen partnerships that will secure safe and sustainable water systems in a changing world.

Current and emerging research programmes including PERMOTOX, INVEST pFASST, AquaBioSens, MariBiome among others represent the next wave of innovation. These projects will help address environmental threats, support digital water systems and improve resilience in Irish and global water environments.

Celebrating Our Journey

Anniversary Week, running from 5 to 12 December, features a series of activities designed to honour our history and look to the future. This includes:

  • Official kick off with a DCU Water Walk.

  • Publication of legacy stories and researcher profiles on the DCU Water Institute website.

  • A campus poster session.

  • A keynote presentation from a leading water expert.

  • An Early Career Researcher Water Sprint.

  • Anniversary Water Cafe and presentation of Water Warrior awards .

  • A specialist PFAS workshop.

  • A commemorative publication capturing the decade of impact and many more.

In November, our Research and Innovation Focus Campaign has been highlighting major projects and the people behind them, leading into the Ten Days to Ten Years countdown across our social channels.

A Thank You to Our Community

The success of the DCU Water Institute over the past ten years has been powered by a strong, dedicated community. We are grateful to our researchers, administrative team, students, partners, funders and supporters who have helped shape the Institute into what it is today.

As we celebrate this milestone and look to the next decade, we remain focused on making meaningful contributions to water science, sustainability and public good locally, nationally and globally.
