We are delighted that Dr Mary McAleese has endorsed and agreed to sponsor the Women in Leadership at DCU Lecture Series.The series will feature a range of high profile successful women leaders who will share their stories including the challenges they faced in becoming role models.

Women in Leadership in Aviaition

Amelia Anderson, Co-founder and President, Advancing Women in Aviation Roundtable (AWAR) and previously Managing Director of American Airlines. During her 30-year career in corporate finance, Amelia saw first hand the challenges that women often face in advancing their careers within the aviation industry. Amelia served as co-chair of the American Airlines Women’s Leadership Program. 

Amelia delived a keynote address, followed by a panel discussion with:

• Cathy Mannion – Commissioner, Commission for Aviation Regulation

• Lisa Cusack – A330 Pilot, Aer Lingus

• Marie-Louise Kelly – Chief Financial Officer, ORIX Aviation

• Mickaël Melaye – Managing Director, Airbus

Francesca McDonagh

Francesca joined Bank of Ireland as Group Chief Executive in October 2017. Founded in 1783, Bank of Ireland is a diversified financial services group. It is the largest Irish bank with an international presence in the UK, US, France and Germany. Since joining the Group, Francesca has articulated the ambition to make Bank of Ireland the National Champion bank in Ireland. 

Francesca is renowned for not only her strategic thinking but also for her proven track record in successfully executing strategy. Passionate about customers and colleagues, Francesca has constantly led front line focused innovation. Francesca also has a powerful and ongoing commitment to inclusion and diversity. This passion for customers and colleagues was recognised in 2017 when Francesca was awarded an OBE for services to banking.

Dr Catherine Day

Catherine Day is a former Secretary General of the European Commission, a post she held for ten years.  Prior to that she was Director General for Environment and worked in the external relations part of the European Commission as a Director and deputy Director General.  Catherine worked in the Cabinets of Commissioners Richard Burke, Peter Sutherland and Leon Brittan between 1982 and 1996.

Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca

Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca is the ninth President of the Republic of Malta since her appointment in 2014.  She graduated from the Unit of Malta with a BA in Legal and Humanistic studies and a notary diploma. News atricle about her visit can be accessed here.

Prof Andrea Nolan OBE 

Professor Nolan (MVB, FRCVS, PhD, DVA, DiplECVAA, DipECVPT) is Principal and Vice Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University and Professor in Veterinary Pharmacology. Andrea graduated as a veterinary surgeon from Trinity College in Dublin and after a short time in veterinary practice, embarked on an academic career which led to her appointment as a lecturer in Veterinary Pharmacology and ultimately Professor in the University of Glasgow. Andrea was awarded an Honorary OBE in 2013 for services to Higher Education and Veterinary Science. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Royal Agricultural Societies. This is part of the Mary McAleese Women in Leadership Lecture Series. The event welcomes all staff from across the DCU community.

Trailblazers in Sport

On 12th April 2018 DCU hosted a Mary McAlesse Women in Leadership Lecture Series on Trailblazers in Sport to share their personal leadership journeys with staff, students, graduates and guests of the university.


The event welcomed an all DCU graduate panel of speakers to share their personal experience of Leadership. Joanne Cantwell (BSc in Journalism), RTE Sunday Game anchor, delivered a keynote address to the audience and later hosted a panel discussion with Fiona Hudson (BSc in Education and Training), member of Dublin's All Ireland Ladies winning team 2017, Jenny Egan (BSc. in Athletic Therapy and Training), Irish International Canoeist, Lindsay Peat (BSc in PE with Biology), International Rugby Player, and Greta Streimikyte (BA in International Relations), Irish Paralympian.
