Professional Diploma in Teaching Physics

Approved by the Department of Education and Skills, this Award will be delivered by DCU in collaboration with partners in the University of Limerick (UL) and NUI Galway (NUIG).

The Professional Diploma in Teaching Physics is a new programme designed to upskill post-primary teachers to meet current Teaching Council subject requirements in Physics at the highest level.

The programme will ensure that successful candidates:

  • Acquire the theoretical and experimental knowledge of physics as well as pedagogical content knowledge that is necessary for effective physics teaching at post-primary level;
  • Demonstrate an ability to connect physics content modules and the school physics curriculum;
  • Develop a high standard of practical competence in physics teaching as reflective practitioners during their programme of study.

 

Programme places are open to registered post-primary teachers irrespective of employment status and consistent with the terms of HEA funding, eligible applicants will be prioritised for admission in terms of:

  • those undertaking the full award
  • unemployed teachers
  • those not in full employment
  • those teaching physics out of field

Participants must meet the relevant eligibility criteria, including providing:

  • Proof of full current registration as a post-primary teacher with the Teaching Council for Education Sector = Route 2 Post Primary.

To do this you need to logon to the Teaching Council Portal and download your current registration certiifcate dated within the last 12 months. 

  • A declaration by participants that their existing qualifications are not sufficient to meet Teaching Council criteria for the purposes of teaching physics at post-primary level

In addition the specific programme requirements are:

  • An honours undergraduate degree at level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), or equivalent.
  • Minimum H4 in Leaving Certificate Mathematics (or equivalent) or 5 ECTS credits in mathematics at NFQ level 6 or above.

If you are unemployed you will be required to confirm that you have support from a second-level
school who will facilitate your practitioner
inquiry.

 

The closing date for receipt of completed applications is January 4th 2021.

    How to Apply

    Applications for course DC769 Professional Diploma in Teaching Physics should be submitted through the DCU Applications Portal.

    Applicants are required to provide the following supplementary documentation with your application, all documentation must be uploaded to the application system before an application can be reviewed. 

    Please save and submit your application form and then you will be prompted to add supplementary documents.

    • NFQ Level 8 Transcripts
    • Leaving Certificate Results or equivalent
    • Proof of full registration as a post-primary teacher with the Teaching Council (e.g. Teaching Council subject declaration form). Upload this against the 'Personal Statement' supplementary item within the application system.
    • Completed self declaration form stating that existing qualifications are not sufficient to meet Teaching Council criteria for the purposes of teaching physics at post-primary level.

    Self Declaration & Recognition of Prior Learning Form

    If you are unemployed you will be required to confirm that you have support from a second-level
    school who will facilitate your practitioner
    inquiry.

     


    Recognition of Prior Learning 

    Prior learning may be recognised in line with the usual practices of Dublin City University (not to exceed 15 ECTS credits for physics content).

    Please submit details of any credits (ECTS) that you have already completed in Physics (including laboratory modules) on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) at level 6 or above, and for which you wish to request recognition of prior learning.

    Recognition of prior learning will NOT be extended to the methodology components of the programme.

    All applications for recognised prior learning (RPL) must be made by completing the Self Declaration and Prior Learning Form and submitting this with your application for the programme. In order to do this, you need to outline the modules you have completed that you feel will qualify you for RPL and include this detail along with all relevant transcripts in your application.

    Applications for RPL will not be accepted after the application process has closed.

    Applications Process
    • Once the application deadline has passed, applications will be reviewed by a selection panel chaired by the Programme Chair.
    • Consistent with the terms of HEA funding, eligible applicants will be prioritised for admission in terms of:
      • those undertaking the full award
      • those teaching physics out of field
      • unemployed teachers
      • those not in full employment
    • Should the number of eligible applicants exceed the number of places available, places will be offered on the basis of the criteria for prioritised admission set out above in the first instance.  Should the number of applicants who are both eligible and meet the criteria for prioritised admission exceed the number of places available, a supervised lottery system will be used to determine the allocation of available places and the order of any subsequent admissions waiting list.
    • Participants must pay an initial deposit of €250 upon acceptance to secure a place on the programme. This deposit will be refunded to those who complete the programme in full or to those who withdraw from the programme within the first two months.
    • All candidates will be informed of the outcome of their application through the DCU applications system.

     

    This programme will be offered on a part-time basis and will deliver 75 ECTS of programme modules over two academic years, beginning in January 2021. Students will complete 10 content-based modules (10x5 ECTS credits each) and participate in online lectures and tutorials as well as face-to-face support tutorials. Students will also complete two experimental-based modules (2 x 5 ECTS credits each) and complete laboratory investigations on six Saturdays during each year. Students will complete 15 ECTS credits of physics pedagogy modules, that will require participation in 2 weeks of summer schools in Year 1, carrying out as inquiry on their own practice throughout Year 2 and culminating in a summer school in Year 2.

    Pedagogy modules PS473L and PS474 will be held as on campus summer schools on the following dates: 

    14th -18th June 2021: PS474 will be held on campus in DCU

    8th-11th June 2021: PS473L will be held on campus in UL with a follow-up day online in August (TBD)

    The programme is free to eligible post-primary teachers and is fully funded by the Department of Education and Skills as part of the national strategy to support the implementation of STEM education and improve standards in physics education in post-primary schools by increasing the numbers of qualified teachers of physics.

    Participants must pay an initial deposit of €250 upon acceptance to secure a place on the programme. This deposit will be refunded to those who complete the programme in full or to those who withdraw from the programme within the first two months.
