Dear Student,
 Creating Your Own Career’s Brand
Awareness of your own skills and achievements is the first step to building your Career Brand. It is really important to do the necessary research about the job or career field that you are considering. Talking to people such as DCU Alumni, parents, lecturers, careers advisors and reading information booklets in the Careers Office can be a good starting point.
Make sure to apply to a variety of companies including multinational and small to medium sized companies. Remember that experience gained in smaller companies can also be very valuable. You should use a variety of job-hunting techniques e.g. DCU Careers Vacancies, Gradireland, Employment Sites, networking, employment fairs and be selective about recruitment companies you wish to sign up to.
A few job hunting tips!:
1.Tailor your CV to every Job applied for. Make sure to attach a Cover Letter.
2.Target your CV/Application to an individual person – if possible. Make an effort to avoid sending CVs out to general HR addresses. An effective marketing strategy is to send your CV directly to the hiring manager e.g. Marketing Manager/Production Manager (Try to track down their names).
3.Get constructive feedback on your CV. Proofread, Proofread, Proofread your CV to avoid mistakes at all costs.
4.Be prepared for the interview – just in case you get a fast response to your application. Be prepared for every question – research the job, company, industry and above all imagine yourself doing the job.
5.Match yourself to the job and be able to name at least 5 Unique Selling Points that you can offer.
6.Be selective and ensure that the job applied for is in keeping with your career goal and how you would like to see your Career Brand develop over time.
Best of luck with the final preparation for the upcoming exams, projects and above all ‘Believe in Yourself’ and know that you can make your dream job a reality.
Best wishes on behalf of DCU Careers Team,
Denise McMorrow, Careers Advisor.
