Which Career?
 Dear Student,
Unsure about your chosen career? Then consider - 'informational interviewing'. An
informational interview involves talking with people who are currently working in the field to gain a better understanding of an occupation or industry -- it also enables you to build a network of contacts in that field. This is a very powerful and accurate way to answer the following questions for you:
1. to screen careers before you change into them
2. to screen jobs before you take them, rather then afterward
3. to screen places before you decide you want to seek employment there
4. to find answers to very specific questions that occur to you during your job-hunt.
How do you go about it? You start with getting the names of people who are working directly in your chosen career. You phone them and ask for a chance to talk with them for 20 minutes. You prepare by making a list of of all the questions you want answers to.
Here are some sample questions:
- What do you like about your job?
- What do you dislike about your job?
- What personal qualities or abilities are important to being successful in this job?
- What part of this job do you find most satisfying/most challenging?
- How do you see jobs in the field changing in the future?
- What special advice would you give someone entering this field?
- What professional journals or organisations would help me learn more?
- What are the key points to include in my CV and cover letter when applying?
- How do I make myself more marketable to employers in this field?
- What do you think of the experience I’ve had so far in terms of entering this field?
- What do you think of my CV? How would you suggest I change it?
- From your perspective, what are the problems you see with working in this field?
- Can you suggest other people who might be valuable sources of information?
