 Chartered Accountancy and DCU

  About Chartered Accountancy
Chartered Accountants are members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants In
Ireland (ICAI), which is the largest accountancy body based in Ireland. The scope of
opportunities available through a Chartered Accountant’s qualification is becoming
more widely appreciated, with traditional images of accountants being replaced by an
altogether more dynamic view of the profession.
No longer regarded as simply financial experts working in practice, Chartered
Accountants are accepted as business leaders and key decision-makers of the
future, and work in a wide range of business sectors and in a broad spectrum of
roles. In the current difficult economic climate, there has never been a better time to
up-skill to join the elite of financial advisers.

Recognised and respected internationally, the ICAI qualification means that Irish
Chartered Accountants have true global mobility, with over 2,000 Irish members
working abroad in more than 90 countries. The qualification is an outstanding entry
point into business in any part of the world.

Routes to Qualification - The majority of new ICAI students are either graduates or post-graduates. Most graduates come from business degrees, and a competitive range of exemptions are offered to reflect the content and level of the qualification obtained, with some qualifications gaining an entire exemption from first year exams.

Meanwhile, an increasing group of new ICAI students come from non-business
disciplines such as science, IT, engineering, etc. In light of this, DCU run a
Professional Diploma in Accounting (PDA) which is open to all-non business
graduates and acts a foundation qualification for further academic studies in
accountancy. PDA graduates are exempt, in full, from the CAP 1 examinations of the ICAI, which are the exams taken in the first year.

Training Options - Once a student has completed their PDA, they can enrole on an ICAI course, and have several options with regard to where they can train:
• Training In Practice - in a traditional accountancy firm;
• Training In Business - in a non-accountancy company in any sector;
• Pre-Contract Registration - outside of a training contract, up to the end of
CAP 2 (2nd year module)

In the case of training in practice or in business, the firm undertakes to provide the
student with appropriate training and experience and within an agreed financial
package covering renumeration and educational costs. In return, the student
commits to work with the firm for a fixed period, under a fixed term contract, and to
pursue the relevant courses. The Training Contract proves how valuable a resource
training companies see CA students, as they attach great importance to their
development.

INVITATION - To the MSF Information evening Monday Feburary 23rd at 7pm

Come and find out more about the work of Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors
Without Borders.

Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is delighted to invite you to
the next MSF Information Evening on Monday February 23rd, at Royal College of
Surgeons in Ireland, Stephens Green, Dublin 2. Winner of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, MSF is the leading independent humanitarian organisation delivering emergency medical aid in more than 60 countries around the world. MSF provides emergency life-saving relief to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters or exclusion from health care, irrespective of race, religion or political affiliation.

On February 23rd, we invite you to join us for an informal presentation by a returned
volunteer who has worked with MSF in many countries, a short film and a question
and answer session to learn more about MSF and also find out how you can become
part of our field work.
MSF recruits medical and non-medical professionals from a wide range of
backgrounds to fill key roles in our humanitarian programmes. During the evening
you will hear firsthand stories of "life in the field" and the MSF Ireland Recruitment
Officer, Deirdre Mangaoang, will be on hand to discuss the recruitment process and
how you can become involved in MSF’s work.
Everyone is welcome and no registration is required. If you are unable to attend this

PhD Studentship- Chemistry of the sea ice/snowpack/atmosphere system in coastal Antarctica

Please quote ref no: PHD 02/09 Closing date for applications: 1 March 2009
The chemical composition of the polar boundary layer is intricately linked with the
cryosphere (snow/ice). The snowpack is a major source of trace gases that increase
concentrations of the OH radical in the boundary layer. Processes linked to new sea
ice formation drive emissions of halogens, especially bromine and iodine. All these
emissions enhance the oxidising capacity (the fundamental reactivity) of the polar
boundary layer. Given existing and predicted changes in the extent of the
cryosphere, we need to explain current trace gas processes in order to predict their
future role.
BAS’s Atmospheric Chemistry group is at the forefront of such research, and two
highly successful year-round field campaigns have yielded a rare archive of
measurements of boundary layer chemical composition. During this PhD project, the
student will conduct a thorough analysis of the BAS datasets, and then use UEA’s
existing numerical models to test our understanding of processes. Specifically, they
will use an established 1-dimensional multiphase model of the boundary layer that
was recently modified for polar applications and will include a newly developed snow
photochemistry module. Data interpretation will be further assisted with back
trajectories from the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC) to assess the role of
different source regions (open ocean, sea ice or snowpack) on air mass composition.
Insights from the field measurements and the fit to model results will give
confidence that processes are correctly understood. This assurance will allow an
attempt to scale up the very detailed results from the 1-D model to the whole of
Antarctica. The student will be based at the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge but
will spend time at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. At both institutes, the
student will work as a member of highly experienced atmospheric chemistry research
groups. The student will receive training in atmospheric chemistry (with a strong
focus on the polar troposphere) as well as in numerical modelling. This NERC PhD
studentship is linked with the BAS core science programme Chemistry and Past
Climate. Fieldwork is not currently planned during the studentship.

The ideal student will have an excellent degree in a subject where Chemistry and/or
Atmospheric Science comprised the major part. They will also have very good
mathematical ability and a strong interest in Earth System processes.
Salary: Funding is already secured for this studentship. The NERC award for the 2009-
10 year will be £13,290. For more information, see
Information & Eligitability
Anticipated start date: 1st October 2009
For further details about the British Antarctic Survey please see:
Antartica and for the University of East Anglia please see: UEA
Applicants should include a cover letter, a CV and the e-mail addresses of two
referees. We anticipate holding interviews in Cambridge on 23rd March 2009.

Applications and enquiries should be addressed to:
Dr Anna Jones, British Antarctic Survey, High Cross, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0ET, UK. Email: aejo@bas.ac.uk
