Dear Student,
 Information is Power
Unsure about your chosen career? Want to know what it would be like to work in certain industries? Do you want to find out more about the qualities and skills required for a certain role? Then consider - 'informational interviewing'.
An informational interview involves talking with people who are currently working in the field to gain a better understanding of an occupation or industry. It also enables you to build a network of contacts in that field. This is a very powerful and accurate way to answer the following questions for you:
1. to screen careers before you change into them
2. to screen jobs before you take them, rather then afterward
3. to screen places before you decide you want to seek employment there
4. to find answers to very specific questions that occur to you during your job-hunt
How do you go about it? You start with getting the names of people who are working directly in your chosen career. You phone them and ask for a chance to talk with them for 20 minutes. You prepare by making a list of all the questions you want answers to.
Here are some sample questions:
- What do you like about your job?
- What do you dislike about your job?
- What personal qualities or abilities are important to being successful in this job?
- What part of this job do you find most satisfying/most challenging?
- What professional journals or organisations would help me learn more?
- What are the key points to include in my CV and cover letter when applying?
The following sites contain useful information:

Given the increasing salience of East-West migration following the last two waves of European integration, the School of Nursing at DCU are currently developing a new research programme on “Transnational Health Practices in an Enlarged Europe”. The project will try to asses the transnational dimension of the current health seeking practices of Eastern European immigrants in Ireland. It will highlight practices which lead migrants out of the health services of the host country and into their transnational families, networks, communities, as well as the health services of their country of origin. They are looking for a PhD student willing to conduct doctoral research under the umbrella of their research programme. The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- MA in Social Sciences (especially Sociology or Anthropology) or equivalent

Cara International - Travel Programmes for Students |
 |
Cara International is an international travel company based in Castlebar. They organise cultural exhange programmes abroad for students. Their programmes include internships, paid work, volunteer projects and language travel. They are currently accepting applications for their American Programmes, the J1 Work & Travel Programme and the US Camp Counsellor Programme. Both programmes should appeal to students right across the board, however, the Camp Counsellor Programme would be ideal for anyone studying childcare, teaching or outdoor pursuits. Students typically have their expenses paid (flights up to $800, Visa, SEVIS, Accident & Medical Insurance, food and board at camp and a stipend of around $500). Students who have special skills (music, teaching, soccer coaching etc) can apply to work as an assistant director in their area of expertise and typically get paid a bit more ($700 - $1000). Their J1 Programme is different to that of other organisations in that they support students in finding jobs and housing. The type of job placements they provide as part of the J1 Programme are generally those where employers have seasonal needs (hotel and restaurant industry, amusement parks, retail sales, beach resorts, fisheries). They only work with employers that arrange housing for participants. Their U.S. partner provides 24/7 on the ground support to students for the duration of the programme.
