 What is a Career? - Destinations® clarifies

What does Career mean to you?
Uses of terms such as 'career' and 'employment' are constantly changing as the world of work develops and shifts. However, it is not only the structure of industry that influences the shape of careers, but what people want and value in their working life. Modern interpretations of 'career' can incorporate achievements in all areas of your life, including education, leisure time activities, family commitments, voluntary work, as well as paid work.

Thinking about how your working life can align with your values, interests or personal circumstances, can help you to understand what career might mean to you.

Destinations® explores the following:
- Change and adaptability: changes, motivation, expect the unexpected!
- Adaptability & working life: curiosity, persistence, flexibility, optimism, risk taking
- Portfolio working: alternative to full-time working

Access to Destinations® is from the DCU Careers Website, you are required to use your Novell password. Destinations

All the best from Fionnuala & the Careers Service Team.

Key Event: 1st December: Enterprise - Start Your Own Business

When market and employment conditions are tough or uncertain, starting your own business may be an option worth examining.

When: Tuesday 1st December
Where: QG21
Time: 1-2pm

Topic: Enterprise: Start Your Own Business

Our Speaker -
Professor Colm O’Gorman offers this opportunity to share with you some insights on starting a business. Starting a business may not seem like an obvious choice for many students. You might argue that you don't have much work or business experience, that you don't have savings or 'creditworthiness' with a bank, that you don't know 'how to' start a business, and that 2009 is a bad time to try to start a business. Yet many thousands of businesses are started every year, and a significant minority are started by 'young' people.

Furthermore I have estimated that by 2020 as many as one in every five DCU graduates from 2009 will have either started a business or be actively trying to start a business. In this workshop we will answer three questions:

1. Do you have what it takes to start a business?
2. How do people like you start businesses?
3. What should you do next if you are interested in starting a business now or in the
future?

Who is this for?
All students from any discipline are welcome to attend.
