 Competency Based Interviews

  As we come to the end of the summer, there are small signs that the marketplace is picking up a little and more job opportunities are available to graduates. it is now more important than ever to prepare well both for your applications and your subsequent interviews.

Several employers are now using a "competency based" approach to interviews. This is where they ask you to tell them about your past academic, employment, project, extra-curricular activity and internship experiences - what you did, how you handled particular situations, and what you learned from all this.

Do not forget to use the STARR approach when preparing this.
S = situation; T = task; A = action; R = result; R = reflection.

Competencies usually cover the skills and personal qualities needed for the job. Here are a few situations for you to check out how you might answer these:
1. Please provide an example of where you have demonstrated leadership qualities.
2. Please describe a project where you were under strict time deadlines to provide a result.
3. Please describe a situation where you had to convince unwilling participants of the value of a particular course of action.
4. Please describe a situation where you were the recipient of criticism.

These are just a few examples. Use the STARR structure to prepare your response. Please note the Careers Service is available to you for up to 2 years after graduation to help you with career related decisions.

Best wishes,
Muireann and the Careers Team.
