Edition week: 26-Oct-10

Focus on Interviews particularly Accountancy, Finance and Law

  Dear Students

Our topic today is Interviews. Congratulations to all who successfully completed the application process for the Chartered Accountancy Milkround activities this week and best wishes to those who are submitting applications for finance and law over the coming weeks.

Your next step is to prepare well for the interview process-
The following hints may be of help to you-
• Re- read a copy of the application you submitted and make sure you are able to answer questions on all aspects of your application form
• Revisit the web site of the firm or company and ensure that you know what’s topical for them as well as the kind of personal qualities they are looking for in successful candidates who fit in with their company culture
• Competency based interviews is the norm, although some firms, companies and organisations might use a ‘ strengths interview’ approach
• Practice the ‘tell me’ questions such as "tell me about a time when you had had to inject life into a failing project (motivation)" or "tell me about a time when you had to cope with strict deadlines or time demands (managing priorities)" or "tell me about a time when you had to make a decision which everyone did not agree with, to get the job done (influence/communication)"
• Use the STARR approach when preparing your competency answer-
o S= Situation or context
o T= Task or objective
o A= Actions or what you did
o R= Result or outcome
o R= Review or reflect – what you might do differently next time et
• Strength interviews will also have a bank of questions to test the strength of your skills- An example question might be – How do you know you had a good day yesterday? (managing priorities)
• Practice in a group of 3 where you can take different roles- interviewer, interviewee and observer. This approach can be very helpful
• Make sure you are up to speed with CURRENT AFFAIRS-
• Have a few questions to ask. The less predictable these are the better!
• On the day, be confident (you have prepared well), relaxed and communicate clearly and concisely

That’s all for this week. Enjoy the bank holiday weekend-

Best of luck, Le dea-ghuí
