Edition week: 23-Nov-10

 Employability Skills

In today’s marketplace, you will be competing for jobs with a number of other graduates who are equally well-qualified academically. In addition to your qualification, employers are interested in your skills, qualities and experiences that will add value to their organisation.

Employability skills have been defined as:
"A set of achievements, understandings and personal attributes that make individuals more likely to gain employment and to be successful in their chosen occupations" (Yorke 2004). Other names for employability skills include transferable skills (because skills developed in one area of your life can be transferred to other areas) or generic skills.

Employers look for a range of skills in graduate applicants, many of which are common to a number of different career areas. Examples of these skills include communication, team working, leadership, initiative, problem-solving, flexibility, adaptability, application of numeracy, commercial awareness, self-management and IT skills.

The 2009 CBI Education and Skills survey revealed that 78 per cent of employers said that employability skills are important when recruiting. This was followed by 72 per cent of employers who stated that positive attitude is important when recruiting (Future Fit: Preparing Graduates for the World of Work). Be sure to focus on your wider skills, qualities and attributes that you as a person can bring to an organisation.

Think about the area you want to enter – what are the key skills required. It is important that you can give evidence of the required skills. Examples can be drawn from your studies, work experiences (intra, part-time, summer, voluntary), year abroad, participation in clubs & societies, and extra curricular activities.

To find out the next steps of previous graduates from your course, view the First Destination Return Survey of Graduates (surveying graduates six months after graduation). Details at: www.dcu.ie/students/careers/fdr/index.shtml

Keep watch on the News and Events section of the Careers web site for events and employer presentations to help you with your next steps. Also, there are currently 117 job advertisements on the Careers Vacancy System at: www.dcu.ie/students/careers/students-vacancies.shtml

Erasmus Mundus scholarships for European students and doctoral candidates.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships are available for students from all over the world to take part in Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Courses and Doctoral Programmes.

These are joint study or research programmes offered by a consortium of higher education institutions or research organisations from the EU and in many cases from outside Europe. These integrated joint programmes include a mandatory study or research period in at least two different European countries. If the consortium includes partners from countries outside the EU, the "mobility tracks" offered may also include a period of study/research at these institutions. All programmes lead to the award of a joint, double or multiple degree recognised in the European countries represented in the consortium.

There are currently 123 Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses (ranging from 60 to 120 ECTS) and 24 Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Programmes (lasting three or four years), covering a wide range of academic disciplines (see "How to apply" section below) and offering Erasmus Mundus scholarships/fellowships for studies and research activities starting in the academic year 2011/2012.

While during the first phase of Erasmus Mundus (2004-2008), scholarships were only available for non-European students, since the academic year 2010/2011, students and doctoral candidates from the EU are also eligible for Erasmus Mundus scholarships and fellowships.

More information? Erasmus Mundus website: eacea.ec.europa.eu/erasmus_mundus/index_en.php

On the Erasmus Mundus website, you can consult a range of FAQs for students, as well as the Erasmus Mundus Programme Guide. This document provides a detailed description of the main characteristics of Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes, and of the scholarship/fellowship scheme that accompanies them.
