 Editorial

  Dear Students,

The end is in sight! First of all, the Careers Team would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you all on getting this far in your studies. This success is testament to the determination, persistence and drive you all have that will be necessary for the next phase in your lives – the world of work.

Tips for transition from University to Work:

• Know your workplace - every organisation and place of work will differ so take some time to research your future place of work and the culture that exists there. Don’t make assumptions surrounding dress code and etiquette, ask questions and find out what will be expected of you in your professional life.

• Professional development – your new role will differ greatly from your current role as a student. Try not to panic, you won’t be expected to know it all straight away. Large graduate recruiters will have very structured programmes of induction and training for new graduates. It is vital that you make the most of this training and get maximum benefit out of it.

• Think long-term – Remember, most of you will change careers many times throughout your working lives so it is important to always look to the future. Take advantage of all opportunities that will benefit your ongoing professional development and future career paths.

• Networking – it’s never too early to start to building up your contacts. It’s all about who you know so don’t be backward in putting yourself forward! The professional networking site www.linkedin.com is a great way to start making contacts and following organisations you may aspire to become part of in the future.

• Go the extra mile – as we mentioned above it is unlikely that you as graduates will enter into a job for life, so it is important to display initiative and pro-activeness in your work. It is your responsibility to become valued members of the workforce and to think about future possibilities. As a graduate your overall performance in your new role will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. This review will cover your motivation, your capacity to handle the professional demands of your role, and how well you integrate with your colleagues.
If you have not yet begun your job search or have not yet been offered a job here are some things to do to get the ball rolling:

• Register on Gradireland to receive updates about jobs AND read information booklet relevant to your area.
