Edition week: 25-May-11

 Editorial

  Dear Students

You are most likely in the middle of your exams at this point, and many of you final year students are also working on putting your dissertations together. Remember to focus on that finish line and stay focused and positive!

The theme for this month is 'knowing your skills'. Transferable, generic or soft skills are something which all employers are looking for in graduates. Being aware of your skills, and being able to give examples of where you demonstrated these is vital when going for interviews.

The skill for this week is Analysis. Analysis (or analytical skills) are all about taking a piece of complex data or information, being able to break it down into its main components, and finding the relationships between the different components. It is an essential research skill, and also important for working in many roles (for example reviewing reports and large complex company documents, research activity etc).

The following acronym may help you in remembering this skill:-

A - Analysis is a key skill every graduate needs to have
N - New complex information which you need to better understand?
A – Action follows analysis
L - Layout or organise your data into a logical order
Y - You need to be aware of the specific questions you have in mind
S - Separate the data into its component parts
I - Identify the essential, most important points and their relations
S - Summarise the key points, findings, relationships...

Can you think of any time when you have demonstrated this skill? Is this a skill your potential employers will be looking for in their employees? Ask yourself these questions and be aware of your skills when updating your CV, completing application forms and going for interviews.

Best wishes,
Rachel (Intern), Muireann and the Careers Team

Assistantships for graduates completing an MA or PhD in German Studies

German Studies in Mary Immaculate College (University of Limerick) combines both language and cultural studies, with a particular focus on inter-/transcultural issues. The undergraduate curriculum is informed by a broad interpretation of culture, which interprets film, literature and everyday discourse as expressions of particular cultures. Students thus acquire language and intercultural skills which are essential in an increasingly globalised and multi-cultural society. This is reflected in staff research fields, ranging from literature, film and cultural studies to teaching methodology. German Studies welcomes research proposals leading to the degrees of MA and PhD.

A limited number of Assistantships is available for graduates wishing to do an MA or PhD in German Studies. Applications in the area of the following two research projects will be prioritised:

- Images of the ‘European East’ (and ‘West’) in German (and Irish) literature and other cultural expressions

- Culture & Conflict: post-war German literature and visual culture

The Assistantships are worth €6,600 per year and also include a fee waiver for a maximum of 3 years. Assistantships normally involve the teaching of tutorials, and as such may be of interest to those with an existing teaching qualification. Entry requirement is a degree in German and/or sufficient language competency.

Draft proposals and CVs must be submitted to sabine.egger@mic.ul.ie by 11 July 2011. These may be completed in German or English. Applications supported by the Department will then be finalised and forwarded to the Postgraduate Office in late August. Assistantships normally commence on 1 September.

For further information, please contact Dr Sabine Egger at sabine.egger@mic.ul.ie, or Dr Christiane Schönfeld, christiane.schonfeld@mic.ul.ie. Alternatively, visit www.mic.ul.ie/german/postgrad.htm
