Edition week: 1-Jun-11
Dear Students,

Today our focus is on a range Skills Employers are looking for in newly qualified graduates. This week careers service staff had discussions with a number of employers who are currently hiring.
PASSION was a word frequently used by companies we met. You need to be able to demonstrate your passion for what you are currently doing as well as your passion for the company and job specification you are applying for. Passion is credible when backed up with evidence. The following are a basic set of skills, which many of these companies require.
• Communication
• Team work
• Organisation
• Problem Solving- solution focused
• Analytical and Critical
• Multi- tasking
• Management (people; project; budget; time)
• Customer focus- Sales/Marketing
• Proactive
• Business acumen
• Language skills
• Innovation
• IT (including social media)
• Capacity to make a difference
Can you show evidence of acquiring and developing these skills in your time in DCU? Think both in terms of curriculum based and extra curricular activities where you can clearly demonstrate the practice of the skill in question. What are your stories? I suggest you prepare at least 2 scenarios for each of the skills mentioned above. This will improve your performance particularly in relation to specific questions on the online application forms as well as in competency based interviews.
Finally, make sure to have your 30 second ELEVATOR pitch ready which should focus on your unique selling points (USP).
Wishing you the very best of luck in the next phase of your career development. Keep in touch with your Careers Service
