Edition week: 2-Nov-11
Dear Students
 Dear Students,
Whether you are a first year or a final year student, today is a day for you, to ‘Take Control of your Future’ and begin to set in motion the wheels to ensure your desired outcome. Define what you want to achieve both from an academic, personal and professional point of view and consider the process you will engage, to make this happen. To help you on your way, I offer 2 acronyms which suggest models to assist you in self-awareness as well as with the career guidance process.
First of all, I note you are all very important people with lots of skills competencies and attributes
1. VIPS: ( Self-awareness)
Values: Identify your Values
Interests: Define your interests
Personality: Know your personality type
Skills: Your Skills need stories to make impact
2. SODA ( Model of Guidance)
S: Self- awareness
O: Opportunity awareness
D: Decision Making
A: Action
Recently, the Careers Services of several Universities and Institutes of Technology produced an excellent workbook called ‘Taking Control of You Future’. It is a very practical workbook for students and graduates , based on VIPS and SODA with lots of practical exercises and a wealth of relevant web sites for self- assessment, job opportunities, further study and volunteering, Collect a copy (limited supply) in the Careers Office – Grattan building- CG28 before they are all gone. You do not want to be without it as you explore new horizons and destinations.
Enjoy the bank holiday weekend.
Le dea-ghuí
Muireann and the Careers Team.
