Edition week: 30-Nov-11

 Dear Students,

Telephone interviews are currently becoming an increasingly popular choice with employers. Employers are using telephone interviews in the initial screening process to find out if applicants are truly interested in the job and company in question. Telephone interviews are equally important as a face to face interviews and preparation is the key. Below are some tips for how to prepare for a telephone interview.
Practice in the same manner as you would for a conventional interview.
Recreate a business environment in your home and ensure you take the call in a quiet, private place.
Enthusiasm and interest should be conveyed to the potential employer.
Personality needs to shine through so that you make a good first impression.
Ensure you have an appropriate answering machine message on your phone.
Repeat the question back to the interviewer to give you time to think if a question is difficult.
Answers should be brief and to the point - avoid long, rambling answers.
Tone of voice should reflect your interest in the job as visual cues cannot be relied on.
Imagine the interviewer is in the room and talk directly to them.
Observe the usual interview conventions – be polite.
Note that you can have your CV and other information to hand – use it!

Remember to treat the telephone interview the same you would a traditional interview and aim to make a good first impression. It might even be helpful to change into business attire to help you to take the interview seriously. Don’t forget to smile as this will come across in your voice. Be confident and sell yourself!
Here are some websites that will help you to be successful in the telephone interview.
