Edition week: 14-Dec-11
Dear Students,
What’s the secret formula to winning the hearts and minds of employers? Many of us wonder what that unique combination of skills and values are that make employers choose one candidate over another. This week we will look at the main skills that employers want.
The good news is that once you understand the skills that most employers are looking for, you can tailor your CV, cover letter and interview preparation to showcase these.
So, what are these skills that employers are looking for?
Communications skills – Your ability to listen, write and speak effectively. Successful communication is critical in any organisation.
Analytical/Research skills - Your ability to assess a situation, seek multiple perspectives, gather more information if necessary, and identify key issues that need to be addressed.
Interpersonal skills - Your ability to relate to your co-workers, inspire others to participate, and avoid conflict with co-workers.
Planning/Organising – Your ability to design, plan, organise, and implement projects and tasks within an agreed timeframe.
Problem-Solving/Reasoning/Creativity – Your ability to find solutions to problems using your creativity, reasoning, and past experiences along with the available information and resources.
Teamwork – Your ability to work with others in a professional manner while attempting to achieve a common goal.
How do I include these in my CV or at Interview?
Give examples of how you have demonstrated these skills on your CV. Remember to always have at least two examples ready to explain to the Interviewers how you have demonstrated these skills listed above. Examples can be drawn from your studies, work experiences, voluntary work and extracurricular activities. The STAR system (Situation, Task, Action, Result & Reflection/learning) is an excellent way of communicating your skills and abilities to employers. For more information: www.dcu.ie/internal/careers/destinations_v3/units/unit-s017.shtml (DCU username and password required).
Best of luck with your CV and Interview preparation.
