I keep hearing about ‘transferable skills’ – what are they?

  Transferable skills are developed through:
- study (course work)
- extracurricular activities
- voluntary work
- employment (summer, part-time, INTRA etc)
- clubs & societies
- students’ union (faculty convenor, class rep)
- year abroad
- interests and other life experiences
that are useful and relevant in the workplace. Examples include team working as a result of group work on your course, or working as part of a team in your summer job.

Take some time to identify your skills from the activities you’ve been involved in. Employers look for concrete evidence to support the claims you make about your skills. Therefore, you need to provide good examples.

For more information on transferable skills including tips on how to give examples, go to: www.dcu.ie/internal/careers/destinations_v3/units/skills.shtml (you need to login with your DCU username and password).

All the best,

Yvonne and the Careers Service Team
