Thinking about postgraduate courses?
Its a big decision Are you thinking about starting a new job or doing a postgraduate course? Many deadlines are approaching, so start preparing now. Here are some points to bear in mind as you mull over the options:
Its important that you do a postgraduate course for the right reasons.
If its to enhance your career prospects, double check that it will fulfil this purpose. Some postgraduate courses are a necessary requirement for certain career paths, others can be viewed more as an optional add-on to your degree and others can be a way of breaking into a new field; doing something different from your degree. The right postgraduate course can give you an edge in the labour market. However some career areas, work experience may be more valuable certain points.
To gain more insight into this and help you make your decision:
o Speak with your current lecturers and with those working on the post-graduate courses you are considering.
o Look at jobs advertisements in your chosen field what qualifications are needed?
o Speak with graduates of these courses and with people who are working in your field. Find out first hand how valuable a postgraduate course would be to you in the future.
If you decide to apply for a postgraduate course, take care to choose the right one. Do something you have a sustained interest in and check out the job prospects associated with each option.
If you are thinking of embarking on a PhD, it is imperative that you have a good relationship with your (potential) supervisor as well as a strong interest in your research topic. Your supervisor will be an invaluable support to you when studying at level 10 so it is vital that you work well together. Again, talk to potential supervisors and to graduates and current PhD students and ask their advice.
Treat the postgraduate application process as you would a job. Allow yourself enough time to fill the application form carefully and prepare well for the interview, thinking about how you fit the criteria.
Applications for post graduate courses are (almost all) processed through www.PAC.ie (Postgraduate Applications Centre ). It costs 45 per institution. Look carefully at deadlines, minimum requirements etc.
Overall, best of luck and do get in touch if you need any help in making your decision.
