 Comhlámh Workshop - Volunteering Overseas: Where do I start?

  Who should attend?
This course is open to anyone considering volunteering or working overseas for
global development (both short-term and long-term).

What is covered?
This participatory one-day workshop allows participants to explore important issues
in volunteering for global development:
*An introduction to development
*The role of the volunteer/development worker in contributing to change
*Motivations and expectations for volunteering
*Types of volunteering opportunities available
*Possibilities for getting involved in global development from Ireland

What does the course achieve?
*An awareness of various approaches to global development
*A consideration of critical perspectives on volunteering
*Reflection on good practice in overseas volunteering
*A space for people who are considering volunteering overseas to meet, explore and
discuss the issues informally
*An opportunity to meet with recently returned volunteers and development workers

How much does it cost?
€15 Comhlámh member/student or unwaged
€30 non-member (waged)

Wellcome Trust Science Writing Prize 2012:

Wellcome Trust, in association with the 'Guardian' and the 'Observer', have launched the second year of their Science Writing Prize (www.wellcome.ac.uk/Funding/Public-engagement/Science-writing-prize/index.htm).They're looking for short articles (800 words) that address any area of science and would be suitable for publication in the 'Guardian' or the 'Observer' in print and online. The judges are looking for originality, bright ideas and a distinctive writing style that shows a passion for science and encourages the general public to consider, question and debate the key issues in science and society. Students can enter in either of two categories: (a) professional scientists of postgraduate level and above or (b) anyone else with a non-professional interest in science, including undergraduate students. The winning articles from each category will be published in the 'Guardian' or the 'Observer', and winners will also receive a £1000 (GBP) cash prize.  The Guardian - Student Media Awards 2012

For 34 years the Guardian Student Media Awards have continued to launch students
into professional careers and now it's your chance to show you've got what it
takes.However limited your resources, our experienced judging panel will recognise
the kind of imagination and energy that will drive a succesful career in media. They
know, because they've been in your position, and if your succesful, pretty soon you
could be in theirs.

Winners will be awarded two weeks work experience at the Guardian with runners up
receiving one week. The winner of the Student Critic of the Year category will win a 6
month internship at NME.

The shortlist will be announced in MediaGuardian in September. The winners will be
revealed after the awards ceremony in November 2012.
