Are you flying the Emotional Intelligence flag?
In recent years, it has become widely known that in most jobs that require interaction with other people, an employee with higher emotional intelligence is more effective, successful and more in demand by employers than an employee with higher IQ.
So how do you spot a person with high emotional intelligence? According to psychologists, people with high emotional intelligence show the following traits:
• Motivation – they love challenges and really want to deliver the best results
• Strong self-awareness – they are self-aware of both personal strengths and areas for development
• Empathy – they quickly grasp the needs and views of those they work with, are good listeners, are open and honest and recognise and respect the feelings of others
• Strong ability to interact socially – they are generally helpful and quick to build and maintain relationships, good communicators and always seem to respond in an affable and positive manner
Some tips on how you can improve your emotional intelligence?
• Think positively thoughts and be solution-focused
• Give yourself a reason to arrive at work with enthusiastic energy each day
• Reflect on your own behavior and the outcome of your actions and body language
• Have regular greetings to your colleagues, listen to them, be helpful and mean what you say
• Appreciate others for the effort done in the projects regardless of the extent of the success of the project
You can generally improve your emotional intelligence by identifying your weak points (areas for development) and working upon them. Always inspect your actions and the impact upon the feelings of other people. Own up to your mistakes and work to remedy any hurt your actions may have caused. And, one other thing: a smile does reach a mile……

€ 2million prize from the EU |
 |
The European Commission today offered a €2 million prize to encourage inventors
to overcome one of the biggest barriers to using vaccines in developing countries:
the need to keep them stable at any ambient temperature. The prize will be
announced by Research, Innovation and Science Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-
Quinn at the third Innovation in Healthcare conference in Brussels. It is the first time
the European Commission has offered a so-called inducement prize to stimulate
research and innovation in the European Union. Most Europeans are protected from
infectious diseases such as hepatitis B and measles thanks to widespread use of
vaccination, but many people in tropical and developing countries cannot benefit
from these great achievements of medicine. Vaccines are often rendered ineffective
by temperature variations in these regions during transport and storage, long before
they can be administered. The World Health Organisation estimates that half of all
supplied vaccine doses are wasted. Since most of this wastage is caused by an
inadequate cold-chain, there is an urgent need for alternatives to, or cost-effective
improvements on existing technologies. Interested applicants can find the rules for
the competition and can register their interest to participate via the website: ec.europa.eu/research/health/vaccine-prize_en.html The winner
of the prize will be announced in the last quarter of 2013. Inducement prizes refer to
a funding scheme where first a technological, social or scientific challenge is defined
and an award promised for the delivered breakthrough solution. Compared with
traditional funding tools, prizes reduce the entry barriers and help to mobilise new
talents. The use of prizes to encourage scientific breakthroughs, which has a long
history, could be expanded under Horizon 2020, the EU's funding programme for
research and innovation after 2014.
Deadline date - 3rd September 2012
