UNESCO World Higher Education Conference

The UNESCO World Higher Education Conference (WHEC2022) will take place from 18 to 20 May 2022, in Barcelona (and virtually). The overall aim is to reshape ideas and practices in higher education in order to ensure sustainable development for the planet and humanity. Maria Slowey, Professor Emerita, School of Policy and Practice and Founding Director of HERC, has been invited by the UNESCO Institute of Lifelong Learning to contribute to a series on how higher education institutions are responding to the challenges of learning cities, community engagement, and the learning needs of aging societies. The second major UNESCO event is the VII CONFINTEA International Conference on Adult Education, taking place 15-17th June 2022, in Marrakech, Morocco (and virtually)

Adult education is key to transforming our future. Given technological and social changes, the right to education must mean enabling each person, throughout life, to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to realize their potential and live with dignity. (Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General)

All member states and civil society organisations have been invited to respond to a draft framework for action. Ireland is officially represented through the work of colleagues in the Department of Further and Higher Education, and HERC is actively engaged at a national level- through AONTAS- and internationally through the PIMA Network- Promoting, Interrogating and Mobilising for Adult Education; and the International Adult Education Hall of Fame
