DCU sponsors Guidance Counsellors Conference

DCU has been named as the main sponsor of this week’s Institute of Guidance Counsellors Conference, the annual gathering of guidance counsellors from throughout the country.  Professor Brian MacCraith, President of DCU, will address the conference plenary session on Saturday 28th February, on the significant and exciting changes currently underway in higher education in Ireland, with the planned coming together of St Patricks College, Drumcondra (SPD), Mater Dei Institute of Education (MDI) and Church of Ireland College of Education (CICE) with DCU.

Speaking in advance of the Conference, Professor Brian MacCraith said,

“DCU is delighted to be the main sponsor of the IGC Annual Conference. We see this as an opportunity not only to support the IGC as an important national organisation but also to endorse publicly the critical role that Guidance Counsellors play in our education system.  Here at DCU, we build on the invaluable work undertaken by Irish Guidance Counsellors in schools by preparing our students to unlock their full potential and make a difference in society, yet to be adaptable and resilient when facing an uncertain future. This conference will address a range of important issues and we look forward to productive discussions there.”

The Conference will take place in Waterford from Friday 27th February to Sunday 1st March and this year’s theme is ‘Being Positive in Guidance’, ‘Bígí Linn’.  The event will be attended by 500 of the country’s practitioners in second level schools, third level colleges, adult guidance services, private practice and in other settings. Other speakers at the event will include Minister of State Damien English; Education & Career Researcher/Consultant David Andrews OBE; positive psychologist, Jolanta Burke; and philosopher and educator, Dom Mark-Patrick Hederman, Glenstal Abbey.
