5 Students selected for 2015 World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea

Four DCU students and one St Patrick’s College student have qualified to represent Ireland in soccer at the 28th World University Games to be held in Gwangju, South Korea from the 3rd – 14th July 2015.   A total of 91 students have been selected from Irish Universities for the biennial competition in 6 sports, representing Archery, Athletics, Soccer, Golf, Judo and Swimming.  The World University Games is an international multi-sport event for University athletes. The first official World University Games were organised in 1924 and the event has been held every 2 years since. 

DCU and St Patrick’s College will be represented in Korea by Luke Kelly, Alan O’Sullivan, Robert Gaul, Sarah Rowe & Aisling Frawley, all soccer players. Below are just some of their fantastic achievements in soccer to date:

Luke Kelly, CS1

  • Republic of Ireland Junior International (2014- present)
  • Represented Leinster against Scotland (2015)
  • All Ireland U17 Winners with St.Kevins Boys in 2012
  • FAI Intermediate Cup runner up 2015

Alan O'Sullivan, SSH1

  • Harding Shield Champions with DCU
  • Signed a Professional contract with Aberdeen FC, 2012 
  • Played for Ireland in u17 and u19 European Championship Qualifying Rounds
  • Man of the match and goal scorer against Azerbaijan in under 19 European Qualifiers

Robert Gaul, MEPT1

  • Athlone Town league of Ireland
  • Previously Shelbourne, Dundalk, Drogheda
  • DCU first team captain 2013, 2014, 2015
  • CUFL runner up with DCU 2013

Sarah Rowe, PEB1

  • U15, U17, U19 and Senior International
  • European Semi-Finalist 2014, (U19) League Cup runners up 2013, 2014, League Cup winners 2015, National Cup winners 2015 and runners up 2014
  • EA sports all Ireland Champions, nominated for FAI Player of the Year 2014 (u19)
  • FAI Team of the Year 201, Intermediate all Ireland Champions 2015

Aisling Frawley, SPDE1

  • 2014/15: National league winners with Wexford Youths FC
  • 2013/14: National Cup Winners with Wexford Youths FC
  • 2013 selected for Rep of Ireland National U19 squad for the European Championships.
  • 2012 selected for Rep of Ireland National U17 squad for the European Championships.

Yvonne McGowan, DCU’s Senior Sports Development Officer said “The World University Games is the pinnacle of all University Sporting competition, and being selected to compete at the Games is a great honour and achievement.  DCU develops and supports elite athletes through the Sport Scholarship programme and we are now extremely proud to be supporting our athletes as they compete at the 28th World University Games. We would like to congratulate all 5 athletes for their achievements to date and wish them every success in Gwangju”.
