Get Involved - Volunteer
How do you improve your employment or promotional chances? Volunteer!
Volunteering is being promoted by an increasing number of companies that see the benefit it brings to the localities they operate in and also the business benefits it brings in terms of reputation, staff bonding and training opportunities. This is where the real value-added aspect is in terms of corporate social responsibility.
So how do you get volunteering? It's easy - an excellent starting point is the DCU Volunteer web pages at www.dcu.ie/volunteer/index.shtml. This contains lots of information about volunteering opportunities and a list of voluntary organisations. Other useful websites include:
www.volunteerireland.ie
www.activelink.ie
Benefits of volunteering include the development / enhancement of key transferable skills such as communication, active listening, initiative taking, teamwork, creativity and time management to name but a few. It’s also provides a platform for social networking.
Before offering to volunteer, think about:
- Why you want to volunteer?
- What type of voluntary work you would like (and wouldn't like!) to do
- What skills, experience or enthusiasm you can offer
- How much time you can give
- Other practicalities, such as where and when you want to volunteer
Remember that if you decide to volunteer with an organisation, you do have certain rights and responsibilities (see 'charter for effective volunteering' on the DCU Volunteer website above).
Enjoy the Volunteer experience!

a development hothouse in Scotland for 9 weeks during June to August 2012. Here
they receive daily support and weekly training sessions from industry specialists to
create their games.
This unique competition is open to students enrolled in further education and 3rd
Level colleges on the island of Ireland who are interested in developing a new
innovative product in the games sector.
Dare to be Digital presents a unique opportunity for students. Many of the

elevate@thedigitalhub.com and we will try to help. We are looking forward to seeing
the entries.
Just a reminder of the rule change outlined below.
Important Island of Ireland update
Last year teams applying from the island of Ireland were required to have a mix of
students from Universities in both the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. This rule
has been removed and teams from the Island of Ireland will not have to include a
team member from outside their jurisdiction. Therefore we are expecting
applications from teams on the Island of Ireland, both North and South, and we will
select one team to go forward to represent the Island in Dare 2012. This change
has been implemented following consultation with colleges and with the Department
of Education and Science. So if you are unsure as to what Dare is about go and
check out the competition at www.daretobedigital.com/abo
ut/what.php for more information.
If you need help finding team members or are looking to join a team you can:
Post something on our www.daretobedigital.com/applications/2011-vacancies.php on
the Dare website
Students may apply online at: www.daretobedigital.com
Please email any queries to: enquiries@daretobedigital.com
