School of Mathematical Sciences
For Prospective Research Students
The School of Mathematical Sciences welcomes enquiries from prospective research students.
Informal Preliminary Stage
Prospective students should look at the links on the left to Staff Research Interests, Preprints and Publications to get an idea of which academic staff might be suitable supervisers. They are encouraged to contact these directly. Before an application to become a postgraduate student can be made, the potential student must obtain the agreement of a staff member to act as a supervisor. A description of the proposed research project is also required.
Research Scholarships and Grants
- The IRCSET Embark Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme is an important source of funding for postgraduate students. IRCSET is the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology .
- Staff who have been awarded an external grant, for example under the Research Frontiers Programme of Science Foundation Ireland, also have support for postgraduate students.
- DCU also has a scholarship scheme for high-achieving postgraduates, which provides successful applicants with free accommodation on campus for a year.
- Research students should be able to explain their subject to others, and each full-time student in the School must give tutorials or individual tuition in the Maths Learning Centre. The School makes a payment to students for this work.
Formal Application Procedure
A prospective research student who has reached an informal agreement with a prospective supervisor, should complete a Postgraduate Research Application Form online which can be found on the Registry's page of application forms and here. Students normally apply to be admitted to the Masters register, even if it is their intention to study for a doctorate. The completed form should be submitted to the Registry
