Final Year
students at DCU had the honour this week of meeting Dr
Martin McAleese, husband of President Mary McAleese, during
an insightful afternoon of career development. Dr McAleese
delivered an inspirational talk during the ‘Fast Forward’
event, which aimed to support students in taking control of
their futures and developing a clear plan of action that
will guide them to success after graduation.
Reflecting on his own intriguing career to date, Dr McAleese
reminded DCU students that adaptability and a focus on clear
goals, whether personal or professional, will bring success.
He stressed that as future leaders of government, industry
and society, the students’ talents and expertise will help
to bring Ireland through the difficult economic climate that
we now face.
Delivered by DCU Business School and Student Support &
Development, the ‘Fast Forward’ afternoon kicked off with a
motivational talk by the Business School’s Dr Finian
Buckley, who encouraged students to adopt a positive mental
attitude and to consider all their options. He urged them to
recognise their own unique strengths and abilities. He also
highlighted that, as DCU alumni, they will be amongst the
most employable graduates in Ireland.
Students then took the opportunity to attend dedicated
workshops that enabled them to learn how to stand out in the
graduate jobs market, develop winning techniques for
interview, explore options for the budding entrepreneur, and
find out the benefits of work in the voluntary sector.
One lucky student had the additional benefit of winning a
€200 voucher to kit out him/herself for interview. The
winner of the prize draw was Paul Talbot.
The ‘Fast Forward’ event is indicative of DCU’s dedication
to student development. As the university’s final year
students set out on their future roads, they will explore
endless opportunities and make a valuable contribution to
economic and social progression, both in Ireland and beyond.
