Sporting success for DCU athletes

Eleven DCU students were in action across the world this weekend with tremendous success collecting All-Ireland honours and recording personal bests.

Kilkenny Camogie won both the All Ireland Senior and Intermediate crowns yesterday in Croke Park.

Emma Kavanagh, Stacey Quirke and Kellyann Doyle were in action for the seniors, who claimed their first senior All-Ireland win since 1994, defeating reigning champions Cork on a score-line of 1-13 to 1-9.

Laura Greene, Jennifer Norris and Eimear Corr starred earlier in the day for the Intermediate team who also defeated Cork by 3-6 to 1-11.

Emma Brennan, a recent DCU Science graduate won the All-Ireland Junior title as Carlow defeated Armagh 4-10 to 2-7.

On Saturday in Rio, Greta Streimikyte recorded a personal best in the T13 1500m Paralympics final.

The 21-year old International Relations student, recorded a fourth place finish in her first ever Paralympic final.

Greta, who moved to Ireland from Lithuania five years ago, recorded a time of 4.45.06.

Also on Saturday, Waterford capped a memorable year by defeating Galway in the U21 All-Ireland Hurling Final by 5-15 to 0-14.

Peter Hogan and Patrick Curran, who also captained the side and collected the Player of the Match award, were part of the victorious Waterford side.

Conor Shirren, a third year Science student was part of the Meath team that beat Mayo in the U21 B Final earlier that afternoon in Thurles.
