Research Interests

My research is broadly defined within sexuality and masculinity studies. In particular, I research male homosociality in society and culture, the role of sexuality in the socialisation of men, the ways in which cultural discourses contribute to societal responses to sexualities, and sexuality-related issues in education. I also conduct research that focuses on representation of masculinities in mainstream media, and the significance of such representations for the sociocultural context within which they occur. Additionally, I write about representations of sex, with an interest in non-normative sex and the way this is framed and presented in cultural productions. Another area of interest to me has been the representation of gender and sexuality in published materials used in education with attention to English language teaching contexts.

Teaching Interests

At DCU, I have taught on a number of modules in SALIS and the School of Communications, ranging from Queer Matters and Ireland, Sex, and Text to Analysing Visual Data, and Race and Social Class and the Media. I have taught Research Methods for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and I am especially interested in research supervision. I am interested in teaching introductory social sciences modules as well as more specialist modules which adopt a sociological and cultural studies perspective in the study of gender and sexuality.
