Academic biography

Julie Bertz is an Associate Professor of Accounting at Dublin City University Business School. She holds a BSc in Accounting from UCC, a MBus in Business from MTU and a PhD from the University of Exeter, mentored by Prof. John Burns.

With credentials as a Fellow of both Chartered Accountants Ireland and the Higher Education Authority, Julie brings a wealth of her practical experience to her academic pursuits. Before joining DCU Business School, she honed her skills as an accountant across various sectors in Ireland and the US, including positions in public service organisations and global multinationals. This included a tenure of four years in local government accounting.

As an educator, Julie has accumulated multiple years of teaching experience. She has been a guiding force for students across various stages – from those pursuing professional accountancy courses to undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education in both financial and management accounting. She was Programme Director of the DCU MSc in Accounting for many years and acts as an external examiner in a number of institutions.

Research interests

Julie’s research is deeply influenced by her experiences and interest in the intricate dynamics of public services delivery and management. She has an avid interest in how individual's behaviours, interactions and values impact this space. A notable area of her research centres on the interplay between social dynamics and management controls and organizational reforms. Additionally, Julie maintains a strong interest in exploring factors that influence the accounting profession, accounting history and student motivation and wellbeing.
