Project Summary
The project aims for the development of an easy-to-use way of warning of possible faecal contamination of water. The microbiological parameters of water are of the particular concern in Ireland. The presence of bacteria, such as E. coli and enterococci, represent a significant danger to public health and is a sign of malfunctioning of water treatment plant or a supplementary contamination of water after treatment. Human and animal waste is the major sources of microbiological pollution in sewage and water environments. Monitoring of microbial water quality rely on culture growth methods and require at least 18-24 hours for analysis. This is not acceptable in the situation where immediate action has to be taken. The work is ongoing in order to evaluate several strategies for utilising surrogate measurements of water quality, such as turbidity, particle size and video sensing, as early warning systems for microbiological contamination, using parallel cell-based measurements for reference purpose. In the longer term, a microfluidic system is planned that can provide a more specific determination of E. coli contamination and will be capable of remote sampling & analysis over extended periods of time. This project is a part of a larger Beaufort Marine award, which involves a number of inter-related research projects. These range across biofouling issues, development of a miniaturised analytical device for marine monitoring, video and satellite sensing of environmental conditions, biorecognition for detection of marine contaminants and fluoroimmunoassay for bacterial sensing.
