Project Summary
The increased awareness of environmental monitoring, as dictated by recent European directives, has led to the development of autonomous platforms for the real-time monitoring of gases in the environment. Such platforms, along with the accompanying data recording and interface software, provide a flexible alternative to the presently employed labour intensive, manual monitoring routines. Successful field trials in excess of 12 months has led to a push for commercialisation, whereby the autonomous systems are smaller, cheaper, have longer deployment times and are more robust. The modular nature of the platform allows sensors to be interchanged, broadening the number of potential applications for this device. Current applications include the monitoring of greenhouse gases and odorant gases. Such monitoring is relevant to the mandatory licensing terms of landfill sites, as regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
