Reactive Wireless Chemical Sensing Network, 2008

Project Summary

Reactive Wireless Chemical Sensing Network

Investigation into the use of low power opposing LED chemical sensor nodes as a means of contaminant plume detection and tracking.  Real-time contaminant concentration data used to determine if a detected chemical event should be automatically reacted to.

Ongoing research is examining the fabrication of sensor using a variety of reagent deposition methods. The goal is reproducible production of chemical sensing layers and analysis of these coatings operation

Smart Landfill / Plant

Development of an autonomous system for the purpose of carbon dioxide and methane gas concentration monitoring on landfill sites.  The developed system will facilitate daily measurement of landfill gas composition at its deployment point.  Collected data will be returned to a user via a GSM modem.  The autonomous system will provide greatly improved temporal data than the presently employed manual monitoring process.

Smart Plant will use an adapted version of the developed gas sampling hardware for  monitoring of airborne VOCs.

Energy Monitoring

Research is being conducted into energy consumption within domestic and laboratory spaces.  ZEM-30 energy monitoring units from Episensor (Irish SME) are being installed, allowing energy consumption data to be sampled once a minute.  Data are wirelessly transmitted to a PC basestation and presented in graphical form to a user.
