My name is Megan and I’m a 5th year Masters Student in Biomedical Engineering. Ever since I was young, I was always drawn to maths and science, and no other course would’ve been more suited to me than this. During the open days in 2018, I fell in love with the DCU campus which led me to picking this course.

Throughout the past four years, this course has exceeded my expectations. I’ve learned about so many topics within maths and engineering, and was exposed to different branches of engineering such as electronic, mechanical, and mechatronic engineering. Teamwork is a huge aspect within my course. We took part in multiple group projects, such as the AGV Design Project, the Boat Project, and the fireman project.

As a biomedical engineering student in DCU, one of the biggest aspects of my time in college is my INTRA work placement. In 3rd year, it’s compulsory to apply for jobs through the INTRA Portal and carry out a 10 month work internship. The purpose of the INTRA internship programme is to gain experience working alongside skilled workers (in this case, engineers) in a professional working environment, and to be exposed to what it’s like working in the real world. This was the most important time for me to grasp as much experience as I could, and to gain any new skills that may be of use in my future career. For my placement, I had the opportunity to work with B. Braun Medical as a Technical Services Engineering Intern.

One piece of advice I would give to someone thinking of choosing this course is to definitely consider joining clubs and/or societies in DCU. Engineering is a heavy course which requires so much studying and hard work! One thing that kept me going was being a part of DCU Dance. Doing something that I love along with a course that I enjoyed really made the difference to my college experience, and also helped me make new friends outside of my course.
