Academic biography
I hold a PhD from University of Oregon, an MBA from Columbia University, New York and have spent a significant portion of my career in banking and consulting practice. Since rejoining DCU in 2011 my roles have included Director of Executive and International Education, five years as a member of the School’s management team and Board, and Programme Chair for the Executive MBA. I teach primarily on our postgraduate and executive education programmes, with a focus on developing leadership skills for the changing world of work. As a teacher, I am driven by a mission to enable managers to recognise and fulfil their potential to positively impact the work and lives of others through effective leadership. I was honoured to be awarded a Senior Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in 2020. My research is currently focussed on skills-based work and the application of agile principles to the management of the HR function. I have published with a range of co-authors in top rated journals including, for example, the Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Human Resource Management, and Sloan Management Review. I engage with/advise industry through consulting and funded research, focused on projects that align with my research interests. Prior to my association with DCU I enjoyed a successful banking career in Dublin, London, and New York with AIB Group. I was also the founder and MD of a Dublin based HR consultancy for over 10 years. I have served as a board member and non-executive Chairman with RecycleIt, a social enterprise based in Clondalkin, Dublin which creates jobs for long term unemployed people
