Jack Raftery Set to Represent Ireland at World University Games

DCU Sport would like to congratulate Jack Raftery, a final-year Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering student and DCU sports scholarship recipient, who has been selected to represent Ireland in the men’s 400 metres at the 32nd Summer World University Games in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr region.

The Games run from the 16th to 27th of July and will feature more than 8,500 athletes from over 100 countries competing across 18 sports. Raftery will contest the heats on the opening day of the athletics programme, 21st of July.

Raftery has enjoyed a breakthrough season, lowering his personal best to 44.98 seconds, the second-fastest Irish 400m performance ever. He is the reigning Irish senior 400m champion and claimed the national indoor title in 2023. He also featured on Ireland’s mixed 4×400m relays that finished eighth and sixth at the World Athletics Championships in 2022 and 2023, and was a European U23 400m finalist last year.

Earlier this month at the European Team Championships, Raftery became only the second Irishman to break the 45-second barrier. A performance that not only helped the Irish team in their overall strong showing, but shows his excellent form heading into the World University Games.
