Orientation and Ignite Activities
What is Orientation?
In the week before the start of semester, DCU provides a series of activities, information sessions and other Ignite activities designed to help you familiarise yourself with how the university operates and provides you with information to start university life. You can visit the Orientation Hub for general orientation information. It is really important that you attend orientation, and that includes the MY DCU and IGNITE activities.
First year undergraduate on-campus activities for Orientation start on the week of Monday, 8th September.
What is Ignite?
IGNITE is a first year Faculty of Engineering and Computing programme that starts with Orientation and continues throughout the year across a number of modules and activities. The aim of IGNITE is to ensure that positive active engagement is fostered from the day you join the Faculty and through the crucial early stages of University, so that positive learner behaviours are established, and you are empowered to be successful. It focuses on improving and enhancing your learning experience, behaviours and mind-set and your sense of belonging, confidence, trust and the connection among each other and with staff. Orientation days are part of the IGNITE programme. Details of IGNITE will be emailed to all students in advance of Orientation and will also be disseminated via Loop (Programme Pages).
Ignite activities will take place on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th of September.
Tool and Component Kits
As an engineering student you'll be completing laboratories and practicals. To do this you will need both a tool kit and a component kit; you can either supply these yourself or purchase one or both from the Faculty. If buying from the Faculty, the tool kit costs €95 (retail price of approximately €225) and the component kit costs €80 (retail price of approximately €120). Full details will be given during orientation including contents listings for if you wish to provide your own equipment. This investment will give you the tools you will need for your undergraduate course and can be used afterwards in further studies or industry. If you have any questions or difficulties with sourcing or purchasing these kits then please speak with one of the Programme Chairs during orientation.
