Cost of Living
We are often asked, particularly by international applicants, to give some indication of the cost of living for a third level student. This is quite a difficult exercise, as the cost of living depends to some extent on each individual student. For example, spending on travel and social life can vary widely from student to student. The following, therefore, are only very approximate estimates of the monthly living expenses of a student living away from and at home during the academic year:
Monthly Cost of Living Away from Home | 2005/2006 € |
---|---|
Self Catering: |
|
Rent shared house or flat (average) | 300 |
Light/heat/power | 54 |
Food | 200 |
Travel (monthly bus/rail commuter ticket) | 74 |
Books and other academic requisites | 45 |
Clothes, laundry, medical etc | 47 |
Social life, other travel, miscellaneous | 117 |
Total | 837 |
Therefore the living expenses of a student living away from home in self-catering shared accommodation for the eight-month academic year will be just under €6,700 (plus student registration charge of €813 in the case of non-grant-holders). International students should also add in the college fees set out in the Finance Fee Booklet.
Monthly Cost of Living at Home | 2005/2006 € |
---|---|
Cost to family for food & accommodation (difficult to estimate) |
120 |
Food in University | 101 |

Social life, other travel, miscellaneous | 117 |
