DCU Structured Mentorship Closing Event

DCU Alumni and the DCU Careers Service co-ordinate the annual mentorship programme for second-year students, which takes place over a six-month period. The programme has been running for three years and offers alumni mentors an opportunity to reconnect with DCU and make a positive impact on the lives of their student mentees by providing career guidance and advice.

Careers Adviser & Student Academic Support Officer Yvonne McLoughlin said, “This year the Mentorship Programme was our biggest year to date in terms of participation“ 90 students and 73 graduates.  Through the various activities including skills sessions; work-shadow day and one-to-one meetings with the mentors, it provided students with an understanding of professional networking and to seize continuous learning opportunities as outlined in our graduate attributes initiative ‘Generation 21’, shaping DCU graduates for life and work in the 21st century. We appreciate the involvement of all our alumni with the programme and wish all participants continued success in their chosen fields.”

Over the course of the programme, DCU Careers and DCU Alumni provide students with a range of valuable workshops, talks and skills sessions. As part of the programme, alumni mentors provide their student mentee with a work-shadowing day. Student participants are required to complete a number of workshops before making a presentation to fellow students on key skills learned during the experience.

DCU Alumni Relations Officer Celine Nic Oireachtaigh warmly thanked the alumni mentors for their participation. “I’d like to express my appreciation and thanks to the seventy-three alumni who volunteered to mentor second-year students this year. Without graduates willing to participate and share their knowledge this programme simply couldn’t run. Mentors have generously given their time and expertise over the past six months and we are delighted to have such a large number of alumni participating and reconnecting with DCU.”
