Take 5 at DCU

‘Take 5,’ a joint initiative between the Access Programmes of DCU, DIT, NUIM, TCD and UCD, has successfully returned this summer. In operation since 2000, the programme provides students from DEIS-supported schools with the opportunity to explore their interests and fulfil their aspirations while building confidence and experiencing day-to-day college life on both an academic and social level.

The ‘Take 5’ Summer School, which every year engages with 4th and 5th year secondary school students, was attended by 80 pupils earlier this month over the course of six days. Each day was spent on the campus of a different institution with the students continually working on projects in the areas of Drama, Marketing/Public Relations, Music and Photography.

Each day of the summer school was also jam-packed with interactive lectures, demonstrations, activities and sports. On top of this, the programme aids the secondary school students with the process of applying to college and the transition from school to third level. The ‘Take 5’ initiative strives to help the students understand that going to college is achievable and allow them to think more deeply about their future after school.

Upon completion of the programme, students and their parents attended a closing ceremony which was held in the Venue of DCU’s Students’ Union Hub.
