DCU staff and students receive 2014/15 Fulbright Awards

Four Dublin City University academics have been awarded Fulbright Awards for the 2014/15 Academic year. Dr. Colm Browning, Ms. Teresa Lynn, Ms. Roe McDermott and Dr. David Monaghan have all been presented with the awards which annually provide the opportunity for the recipient Irish citizens to study, research, or teach in the U.S.

Dr. Colm Browning is a post-doctoral researcher at the Radio and Optical Communications laboratory in DCU, where he recently completed his Ph.D. He will travel to Columbia University, New York, as a result of this award, to undertake research focused on the introduction of high speed optical communication systems to data centres.

Ms. Teresa Lynn, meanwhile, is a Fulbright-Enterprise Ireland Awardee currently undertaking a PhD in Computational Linguistics at Dublin City University and Macquarie University, Sydney. While at Saint Louis University, she will research natural language processing techniques for the development of linguistic resources and technology for the Irish language.

Another recipient is Ms. Roe McDermott, who holds a Masters in Journalism from Dublin City University. McDermott is a sex columnist, features writer and art critic for a number of publications and media platforms in Ireland and, as a Fulbright Student Awardee, will undertake a Master’s degree in Sexuality Studies at San Francisco State University.

Finally, Dr. David Monaghan is a post-doctoral researcher at the Insight centre for data analytics in Dublin City University. During his Fulbright, as a TechImpact Scholar, Dr. Monaghan will travel to Arizona State University to research computer gaming technology and its application to physical rehabilitation adherence, with a particular focus on human computer interaction technology.

A current DCU Business School lecturer, Dr. Sarah Ingle, is a past recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship. She is presently a member of the Fulbright Commission Board, as nominated by An Tánaiste, and is also the President of the Irish Fulbright Alumni Association.
