The European Union: Crisis and Recovery

Brexit Institute awarded funding from the DFA for new online course on the EU

The Brexit Institute has been awarded funding by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The Brexit Institute has been awarded funding by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFA) for a new online course entitled The European Union: Crisis and Recovery, which looks at the recent history of the European Union and its prospects for the future. Twenty local community groups, educational institutes and local media organisations have been awarded funding under the Department’s Communicating Europe Initiative scheme.

The funding was announced by Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne.

“I’m very excited about the range of projects put forward this year under the Communicating Europe Initiative. All of these projects will make extremely valuable contributions to the ongoing public discourse about Ireland’s role in Europe, and in informing citizens on the impact of the EU on their day-to-day lives. Many of the successful projects will be delivered in virtual format, allowing more citizens than ever to get involved and contribute to the discussion.

Projects funded this year include radio programmes and podcasts on the impact of the EU for Ireland, Brexit preparedness events, online learning courses, and a session at the Kilkenomics Festival to be hosted by David McWilliams. All of which will help to open a conversation on the many ways the EU interacts with our daily lives.”

The course is freely accessible to all and will launch on October 5th, running on the web via the platform FutureLearn. The course is designed to inform the public about the principal challenges that have faced the EU over recent years (Brexit, the Euro-Crisis, Migration, the Rule of Law Crisis, and COVID-19), and to communicate how the EU has responded to these challenges.

The Brexit Institute of Dublin City University is Europe’s first centre specifically created to analyse Brexit from both a research and a policy perspective.
