Professor Oliver Dolly receives special award

Prof. Oliver Dolly, Director of DCU’s International Centre for Neurotherapeutics (ICNT) has been awarded the Conway Medal from The Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland for his contribution to research.

Molecular neurobiologist Prof Dolly from Co Galway leads a team of over 10 scientists at the ICNT based at DCU. His area of expertise is in the treatment of nerve communication, using the drug ‘botox’ to develop new therapies to help treat neuromuscular conditions, such as Multiple Sclerosis and bladder complaints amongst many other conditions.

Receiving the award at Dundalk Institute of Technology Prof Dolly said: “It is an honour that the Royal Academy has selected me for this prize, in recognition of the research developments I have made over the past year”.

After obtaining a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biochemistry at University College Galway, Oliver moved to the U.K. for Ph.D. training. The subsequent award of a fellowship from the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America led to three years post-doctoral work in the University of Buffalo, before being appointed to a faculty position at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Prof Dolly spent 27 years at Imperial College London, before returning home to establish the ICNT at DCU four years ago.
