'Modern science threatens social inequality in today’s markets’, says key speaker at Dublin City University lecture.'

Professor Steve Fuller, an eminent sociologist, will give the opening lecture of the Making Waves Lecture Series, at Dublin City University on Thursday 16 February 2006. The Making Waves Lecture Series will be provocative and cutting edge with a wide range of International experts covering topics such as Islam, migration and terrorism. The lecture entitled ‘What is Science?’ is the first in the quarterly series which will attempt to question and challenge a complex discussion in a broad public arena.

Professor Fuller recently appeared in Pennsylvannia Supreme Court supporting the teaching of Intelligent Design in science classes. ID is the presence of an intelligent agent directing the development of a living organism as opposed to the traditional excepted theory of evolution which is when random genetic mutations occur within an organism's genetic code.

The DCU lecture will discuss the emphasis of science discipline and how it has shifted in demand from physics to biology, which has made science more than ever subject to consumer demand. This means that those who can pay will determine the direction of research. If the state does not intervene, both science and society will suffer.

The Making Waves Lecture Series will also present talks by:
* Saskia Sassen, an prominent Sociologist, entitled ‘What is Migration?’ on 27 April 2006
* Zia Sardar, a writer and broadcaster, entitled ‘What is Islam?’ on 19 June 2006.
